White Not?

White Objects, the obets d’art Maison Martin Margiela exhibited at Milan’s Salone Del Mobile in April have now been produced, available in MMM stores worldwide in October. If you think there isn’t demand for a cotton calendar that converts into a 12-piece napkin set when the year is over, think again. In fact, thought is the very essence of these pieces, making for what might be the world’s first cerebral tchotchkes. Or how about all-white Matriochka dolls handmade in Russia. Or an oversized souvenir snowball? A lamp made out of a bottle of an unspecified alcohol with a faded white label? A feather quill attached to a red ballpoint pen? With all the trademarks of MMM’s runway collections—ironic classicism, double entendres, trompe l’oeil—White Objects are, we’re told, part of a larger interior design and architecture project the house is working on for the near future.
