...the new Japanese version of Maison Martin Margiela's celebrated AIDS T-shirt. In various color combinations, the charity tee has been shown in each MMM collection going back to 1994. The text is intentionally obscured, printed on both the front and the inside back, prompting a dialogue about HIV/AIDS between the wearer and those who ask what it says. (For the record, here's the complete text: THERE IS MORE ACTION TO BE DONE TO FIGHT AIDS THAN TO WEAR THIS T-SHIRT BUT IT’S A GOOD START.)
The new Japanese tee, the first non-English version, will launch on World AIDS Day (December 1), with a percentage of sales donated to AIDES, a French organization dedicated to the fight against HIV/AIDS. In the last 16 years, 170,000 T-shirts have been sold, totaling over €700,000 for AIDES. Other languages will appear each year going forward. Exclusively at Maison Martin Margiela stores.
